Our next HealthyMomsZa inspiration is the lovely Anna from Before Breakfast Anna. I just love following this beautiful mamma on Instagram. She is just a positive ray of light and I love everything she stands for Just like most moms, daily commitments and raising two kiddo’s led to her healthy lifestyle taking a back seat for a while, but she is slowly and surely getting back into the swing of things.
Tell us a bit more about yourself? Mom/wife/work etc
My name is Anna, I am a mom to a nearly 5-year-old boy and a 2 and a half-year-old girl. I am wife to Freddy. Fred and I work together, we own a burger restaurant in Baakens Valley, Port Elizabeth. We took the risk to start our business a year and a half ago and we love it. It’s been hard work but we are doing it together and have a flexible lifestyle.
I am also pursuing my writing dreams and recently started my own blog, www.beforebreakfast.co.za. This affords me the opportunity to do a bit of my own thing, I find it refreshing and am grateful for the freedom to do this.
When and why do you choose a healthy lifestyle?
I suppose I have been on a journey towards a healthy lifestyle my whole adult life. After putting on over 20kgs with my first pregnancy, I was motivated to take fitness seriously. I took up running and cross fit and I got really strong and fit. I felt great and got back to my pre-pregnancy weight (but was definitely more toned). I continued with running and cross-fit until halfway into my second pregnancy (but still put on over 20kg again!). I was just too tired and sore (back pain etc) and had a toddler running around to continue with exercise until the end of my pregnancy.
I managed to lose most of the weight gain (and gain a bit of fitness) with a bit of sporadic running after my second pregnancy. We then went overseas for 3 months and when we returned we started our restaurant. So over the past year and a half, I have put on weight – I put that down to bad eating habits (not eating bad things but not eating at the right time and too much snacking). You know how it goes, the thing that you do professionally is the thing that lacks in your personal life!
But over the past year and a half, I have also been on a journey towards a whole foods diet. I just have not had the time to set myself up for success, but am starting to do that more. I am happy to eat any food type, as long as it’s actual food.
Over the past month, I have also started running again (with my husband). We have reached a point in our business where it is growing and we have a good team around us, and I can start to focus on these things. I currently weigh 70kg and would like to get back to my pre-pregnancy weight of 62kg. I felt good at this weight.
When and what workout do you do
At the moment, we run 3 – 4 times a week (5km at a time). Would like to up it and also incorporate another type of exercise.
What inspires/motivates you to keep up with the lifestyle?
When I was really fit after my first pregnancy and I had a toddler to run after, I felt so good! I was so grateful for my body and what I was capable of, I realized that I had an advantage. I want to get this back and have the feeling again that I can do things like run up a mountain, go on adventures with my young family and keep up. I want to get this back and I want to hold on to it.
Also, I do want to look my best. I want to be a hot mama 😉
Do you feel there is a bit of a stigma around healthy/fit moms? That they are frowned upon? They take time away from their family life to work out?
Hmmm, I never think that when I look at healthy fit moms, but I certainly feel a bit of guilt when I take the time out to work on my healthy lifestyle. But, in reference to my point above, I do think that the benefits outweigh the negatives of family life. It’s a great example for kids and it allows me to be a fit, healthy mom and as they get older and faster and more adventurous, I will be able to keep up with them.
All within reason though, I would not want anything to become an obsession in my life
What advice would you give to moms who want to lead a healthy lifestyle but feel they don’t have the time/knowledge to do so?
Firstly, just do it and don’t set your standards too high if you are in a season that does not allow you the freedom and time to give it much attention, the season will change again. Just try to maintain and do what you can when you can. Connect with other moms around this issue and learn from and encourage each other (that’s why I love this initiative).
Keep your mind in a good place and don’t give up on your body, even if it feels like you have ‘already peaked’ – it’s not true, wait for the right season and then you will be amazed at what that old mama body of yours is able to achieve, stretch marks, tummy wobble and all.
Learn about what you are putting into your body, read labels and educate yourself. Make the right choices about food but never stop enjoying food!
